Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying such medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
